Episode Description:
Korean shipbuilders' engine units just posted record profits — and data centers, not ships, are driving the surge.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' engine-business operating profit quadrupled in three years to 693.3 billion won (about 485 million dollars), while first-half orders hit 2.449 billion dollars, about 3.5 trillion won, covering 92 percent of its annual target. Hanwha Engine swung from a 29.5 billion won loss in 2022 to 130.1 billion won (about 91 million dollars) in profit last year as AI data-center demand joins traditional marine orders. Separately, Hyundai and Kia posted a record U.S. July with 165,284 vehicles sold and hybrids up 52 percent to 43,727 units, while China's Chery is investing 108 billion won (about 75 million dollars) in convertible bonds that could hand it up to a 16.22 percent stake in KG Mobility.
